The Liviu Librescu Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Liviu Librescu Memorial Scholarship Fund is established in loving memory and in honor of Dr. Liviu Librescu, Holocaust survivor and devoted professor. Professor Librescu died, as he lived, dedicated to his students and to his profession. He loved his position at Virginia Tech in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics. A prolific researcher and wonderful teacher, he committed himself to his work solely for the love of it. Always available for students, a caring teacher and advisor to graduate student researchers, Professor Librescu's last act was to sacrifice himself to save the students in his classroom during the tragic events of April 16, 2007.
Annual distributions from the Liviu Librescu Memorial Scholarship Fund shall be used to award whole or partial scholarships to outstanding students in the Engineering Science and Mechanics graduate programs at Virginia Tech. Recipients of scholarship aid will be recommended by the graduate committee of the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics. The recipient of the Liviu Librescu Memorial Scholarship will be an outstanding student conducting research in an area that Professor Librescu worked in, namely in solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and dynamics. The criteria to be used are those well reflected in Dr. Librescu's own lifetime of service to his profession and commitment to his colleagues and students: the potential for scholarly achievement in teaching and research, and a demonstrated dedication to the welfare and well-being of others.
